Derek,

You deserve this more than anyone I know. Great story! Anyone who didn't win is going to be a bit upset. People take it personally when someone says "this guy was better than you". Being an actor you know how people get when you get a part over them... I think this is a sign that you should write more (ebooks!)... If nothing else has motivated you to keep writing -- this should! CONGRATS DEREK!

I truly believe that the only rule I did not really follow was the part about being concise. Really the actual part where I told how I would use it was in the middle of the story, after they were able to turn it on. It was about the games, making video, the Blu-ray player, and why I needed a new computer. My Athlon actually stopped working last year with a bad hard drive or controller. I have been sharing someone else's computer since. It will be nice to have my own again, especially one so much better in every way. If you only consider this part of the story, it actually is concise... :P

Anyway, thanks everyone, especially John and crew. I enjoyed reading the runners-up stories as well, myself. All of you keep up the good work too!

Great story, but I too am quite puzzled as to why there was a reminder to follow the rules "precisely", yet the winner didn't follow the rules. I know you wrote "more than anything else, be funny!" but I was kind of interested in reading how others would put it to use. I like fanfic, just not when I'm looking for usage scenarios.

Congratulations Derek - great story, although the part about the feet in the beginning made me feel sick! And to all those sore losers out there, creative writing is highly subjective and John did mention there was some leeway with the structure/narrative of the competition essay. I guess my point is that everybody has a different idea of what constitutes a knee-slapping yarn. So get over it. Yes, we all spent a few hours tapping out a story and dreaming of the dragon - and boy was it fun.

@Raydanator: You didn't come across as a sore loser. You just pointed out that I wasn't as descriptive as I sprobably should have. Since this was my first contest, I'll take all feedback into consideration for the next one. Thanks.

@Toure22: A good percentage of the sites are based outside the US. Furthermore, the top 3 stories were from the US, UK, and Lithuania.
